RESUMO

Background Childhood obesity is a serious health condition with increasing rates worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between inflammation, oxidative stress, vitamin D, copper and zinc in pre-obese and obese children compared to controls. Methods The study involved 202 children aged 7-15 years (63.9% boys), randomly chosen from 10 elementary schools in Podgorica, Montenegro. Participants were divided into three groups according to their nutritional status (International Obesity Task Force [IOTF] criteria): normal-weight (42.1%), pre-obese (40.6%) and obese (17.3%). Serum biochemical analyses were performed (C-reactive protein [CRP], retinol-binding protein [RBP], total antioxidant status [TAS], total vitamin D [VD], copper and zinc). Results Serum TAS and CRP concentrations were higher in pre-obese and obese children compared to controls (p < 0.001). Serum VD concentrations were lower in pre-obese and obese children compared to their normal-weight peers (p = 0.027 and p = 0.054, respectively). Copper, zinc and RBP concentrations did not differ significantly among the groups (p > 0.05). In pre-obese and obese children, a positive correlation was found between CRP and copper (r = 0.305, p = 0.011 and r = 0.440, p = 0.013, respectively), and TAS and RBP (r = 0.528, p < 0.001 and r = 0.434, p = 0.015, respectively). Standard regression analyses showed that CRP and TAS increase (p < 0.001) whereas VD decreases (p = 0.011) with the body mass index (BMI). Conclusions We show that pre-obesity and obesity in childhood are positively associated with oxidative stress and inflammation, and inversely associated with VD status. Copper and zinc concentrations were not associated with excess fat in children.

The concentrations of six trace metals, cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and mercury (Hg) were determined in the soft tissues of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and bottom sediments collected from the coastal area of Boka Kotorska Bay (Montenegrin coast). The mussels and sediment samples were collected at three sites along the Boka Kotorska Bay from the autumn of 2014 to the winter of 2016. The concentrations (mg/kg dw) of these metals in the mussel samples ranged from 1.01 to 2.87 for Cd, 6.08 to 13.2 for Cu, 1.37 to 3.55 for Pb, 85.6 to 241 for Zn, 0.72 to 4.05 for Cr and 0.098 to 0.269 for Hg. The concentrations (mg/kg dw) of these metals in the sediment samples ranged from 0.16 to 0.39 for Cd, 4.32 to 48.2 for Cu, 7.02 to 49.8 for Pb, 22.0 to 158 for Zn, 93.1 to 317 for Cr and 0.035 to 0.497 for Hg. The metal content in the mussel samples and the metal content in the sediment collected from three locations over four different seasons were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) and cluster analysis (CA). A correlation between the metal levels found in the mussel soft tissues with those found in the sediments, for both 2014 and 2015, were established. The metal pollution indexes (MPI) for the sediment and mussels were compared, indicating that the most polluted sediment was at the location Institute of Marine Biology Kotor (IBMK) and the most polluted mussels were sampled from the Zanjice location.

Normal supply of zinc to the newborn via milk is essential for normal development. Using ICP-OES, we analyzed changes in the level of Zn in milk and infant serum in the neonatal period (Day 1 and Day 28 post partum) and at 6 months after delivery, in the cohort of 60 mothers and exclusively breastfed babies. Zn level in the serum showed increase (significant at 6 months) during this period (mg/mL): Day 1: 0.52±0.12; Day 28: 0.59±0.19; 6 months: 0.68±0.28. The concentration of Zn in the milk showed an opposite (decreasing) trend during the follow up: Day 1: 4.70±1.74mg/L; Day 28: 2.65±1.06; 6 months: 0.46±0.36. A significant negative correlation was established between serum and milk [Zn] at day 28 (R=-0.338; p=0.008), whereas a positive correlation was found at 6 months between these parameters (R=0.306; p=0.018). There was no significant correlation between [Zn] in the milk and serum and infants' body mass, mothers' age and mass at delivery. The level of Zn in the milk at 6 months of lactation is not sufficient to meet the recommended values. This implies that in Serbian population, Zn supplementation might be needed in the later phase of lactation.

OBJECTIVES: Milk banks collect, pasteurize, and freeze/store human milk. The processing may alter redox properties of milk, but the effects have not been fully examined. METHODS: We collected 10 mature milk and 10 colostrum samples and applied a battery of biochemical assays and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to inspect changes that milk undergoes with pasteurization and 30 days storage at -20°C. RESULTS: Pasteurization and storage of raw milk did not affect total nonenzymatic antioxidative capacity, but specific components and features were altered. Urate radical and ascorbyl radical emerge as products of exposure of milk to hydroxyl radical-generating system. Processing shifted the load of antioxidative activity from ascorbate to urate and lowered the capacity of milk to diminish hydroxyl radical. Pasteurization caused a significant drop in the activity of 2 major antioxidative enzymes-superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, whereas freezing/storage of raw milk affected only superoxide dismutase. Colostrum showed drastically higher total nonenzymatic antioxidative capacity, hydroxyl radical scavenging ability, and glutathione reductase activity compared with mature milk. CONCLUSIONS: Pasteurization and storage affect nonenzymatic and enzymatic antioxidative agents in human milk. It appears that nonenzymatic antioxidative systems in colostrum and milk are different. The effects of processing may be partially compensated by fortification/spiking with ascorbate before use.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Due to their low tolerance to pollutants and hand-to-mouth pathways the health risk is very high in children's population. The aim of this study was to evaluate risk to children's health based on the content of heavy metals in urban soil samples from Podgorica, Montenegro. This study included the investigation of several toxic metals such as Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn in soil samples from public parks and playgrounds. METHODS: Sampling was conducted in a period October-November, 2012. Based on cluster analysis, soil samples were divided into two groups related to similarity of metal content at examinated locations: the group I--near by recreational or residential areas of the city, and the group II--near traffic roads. Concentration of toxic metals, in urban soil samples were determined by a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (Pb and Cd) and by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry technique after microwave digestion. Due to exposure to urban soil, non-cancerogenic index hazardous index (HI) for children was estimated using 95th percentile values of total metal concentration. The value of the total (ingestion, dermal and inhalation) HI is calculated for maximum, minimum and the average concentration of metals for children. RESULTS: Mean concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn in the surface layer of the studied urban soils were 85.91 mg/kg, 2.8 mg/kg and 52.9 mg/kg and 112.5 mg/kg, respectively. Samples from group II showed higher metal content compared to group I. Urbanization and traffic are the main sources of pollution of the urban soils of Podgorica. Most of the samples (93.5%) had a high Pb content, 12.9% of the samples had a higher content of Cd, while Cu and Zn were within the limits prescribed by national legislation. At one location the level of security for lead is HI = 0.8 and very closed to maximum acceptable value of 1. It is probably the result of intensive traffic near by. CONCLUSION: All metals investigated showed relatively higher concentrations at sites that were close to industrial places and high ways. The mean concentrations of Pb and Zn and maximum concentrations of Pb, Cd, and Zn were higher than presented values in the National Regulation.
